The Startling Benefits Of Chlorine Free Diapers

Changing diapers is every parent’s job, and most of us do so happily with tender loving care, however when it comes to cleaning old fashioned cloth diapers, there is a problem. After complete rinsing of the contents, throwing the soiled diapers into the family’s washing machine is repugnant to many. Those who do so though understand that they need to kill the bacteria contained in those diapers and thus have to resort to adding chlorine (bleach) to the wash. Unfortunately although the diapers come out white and stain free, the bodies of their babies are subject to the harsh realities of chlorine-laden diapers.

Thus, parents have switched to disposable diapers, but upon discovering that even disposable diapers have been created using chlorine to give the paper products that ultra-white color that parents prefer, parents have diligently searched for alternatives. “Natural” paper products are tan or brownish in color, and many objected to the color. Thus manufacturers of disposable diapers began making chlorine-free diapers that were white in color.

This was no easily attained feat, as white paper is bleached to attain that pristine white quality. However modern ingenuity found alternatives that are not harmful to the environment as chlorine bleached paper is, and babies are no longer trapped in products that contain harmful toxins against their tender skin—toxins, in the form of dioxins that have been directly linked to producing cancer.

Chlorine-free diapers have been proven to be much less destructive to the environment in landfills, after all it is a known scientific fact that using chlorine to bleach paper goods so that they are a dazzling white also lets the chlorine derivatives to find their way into our water and ground, causing harm to our sensitive ecology balanced world. Finding environmentally safe diapers that were chlorine free as well as removing the toxic pollutants was essential to proper environmentalism.

Not only that, but chlorine free diapers are significantly gentler to our babies’ tender and highly sensitive skin. A baby’s skin is much thinner, and intensely more fragile as well as less oily than an adult’s skin. Their skin produces substantially less melanin, and it is significantly less resistant to harmful bacteria and other damaging substances found in their environment, especially once the skin is irritated. Thus keeping toxic chlorine away from baby’s skin is of extreme importance.

There are a number of brands of chlorine free diapers, many of which are the unbleached tan color mentioned above, but some are the pristine white required by some parents. In that case, most of the white paper products used to make chlorine free diapers use wood pulp that has been whitened using chlorine-free hydrogen peroxide

Most of the chlorine free diapers can be easily ordered online, and performing a price research on them is a good idea as occasionally you can save a substantial bit of money that way. You may also find them locally in health food stores. Also, because they are gaining in acceptance, it is expected that they will soon be available in other consumer friendly stores in the near future.

  1. Hello, thanks for your article and your desire to let parents know about green choices in diapering. I just wanted to comment on cloth diapers — people shouldn’t ever use bleach on today’s cloth diapers because bleach can harm the waterproof exterior. The best option for getting diapers whiter than white is good old sunshine — which also kills bacteria naturally!

Cloth isn’t icky at all – all you do is put dirty diapers in a dry bucket until laundry day, then put them on an extra rinse cycle before washing them in hot water. When they’re done, stick ‘em on the line outside and your done! It’s easy — believe me, I’m domestically challenged but I’ve managed to do cloth diapers for two years and I still love them! :)

  2. Dear Tamara,
THANK YOU for the useful information about cloth diapers.
    Kind Regards
    Sofia S.
