Parents of newborn babies need to understand that colic is a normal childhood condition, and not a disorder as such that calls for any measure of panic or medical treatment (which there is none by the way, except for some home remedies, endorsed by caregivers who swear it worked for the babies they handled); on the contrary, colicky babies need patient care and looking after besides sleep and rest. Of course, parents might insist they well need it too, which is normal since a severely colicky infant may keep crying and screaming their head off for close to 3-5 hours at a stretch, shattering nerves and any sense of restfulness, but it will go away with time.

Nearly 20 per cent of newborn babies suffer from colic within 2-3 weeks of birth; it usually goes away by the time the infant is 4 months old, or at the latest, 8months of age. However, there is no permanent cure for treating colic and it is best to let nature take its course (in the colic episodes fading off) though some caregivers of colicky babies swear by simple and effective colic remedies, such as giving a pacifier, carrying it for some time, rocking the baby and playing soothing music to lull it to sleep.

Parents can take turns to carry the crying baby and walk around for some time, till the baby is relaxed and also to give their partner some rest; they can also singing a lullaby or playing a CD with soothing child-friendly lyrics or instrumental music on it to induce sleep.

Those parents that have invested in a baby stroller can put it to good use by taking the crying, colicky baby out for a stroll or giving it a warm bath (not hot as infant skin is tender), then massaging the baby’s tummy with baby oil or lotion and packing it up with a towel to keep the warmth in.

Since many doctors believe that the source of colic pains may be consumption of gas or allergen producing and triggering foods, a lactating mother should consult a dietician about what would be good substitutes for cutting these out of her diet to give the baby relief from colic pain. Some of these include avoiding caffeinated foods and cruciferous veggies.

At times, babies may be intolerant to cow’s milk or powder milk or even be lactose intolerance; for such babies, a soy-based nourishment is advised; at times, air may enter the baby’s tract while being bottle-fed, causing colic pain and it’s suggested that new nipples be bought to replace the older ones and parents should burp the infant during and after feeds.

If all else fails, the use of Simethicone drops is advised for infants that are in severe distress due to colic pain as this is a proven medication that is an accepted colic remedy for severely colicky babies.

After all, for both baby and caregivers to get rest is essential for their continued wellbeing so trying out these simple home remedies for checking which one suits your baby is a good way to getting one step closer to the sleep that eludes you now!

Colic is a very common occurrence among babies or newborn. It is no doubt that you must bring your baby to visit a doctor so that he or she can be examined and treated accordingly. But there are various home remedies for colic in order to relieve your baby’s discomfort before being treated by the doctor.

Below are some of the simple and popular home remedies for colic:

1. Give the colicky baby a pacifier so that to help the baby stay calm. This is because infants or babies are used to having something in the mouth due to breast feeding. As the mother’s breasts cannot be there most of the time, pacifier can help preventing excessive crying.

2. One of the most overlooked home remedies for colic is the simple process of burping. According to experts, the amount of air going into your baby’s stomach and intestines can be reduced significantly if you were to let your child burp after feeding. This can be a very effective home remedies for your baby’s colic if done properly and regularly.

3. Giving the baby a warm bath can also help to relieve your baby’s colic pain. However, as this cannot be done everytime, the parent can put a warm bag on the belly or try massaging lotion instead. It will be a good idea to cover the pack with a towel since the temperature could be too much for the infant.

Other than the above home remedies for colic, there are other ways which include using herbal tea, boiled Fernel seeds and soothing the baby’s pain by rubbing some caster oil over his or her tummy. The above-mentioned home remedies for colic can be very useful if you are sure that the infant only experiences simple colic.

<—— 13. Success Tips

As in most tasks in life, success is the synonym of persistence. Another personal observation of mine on which you might agree, is that success is also synonym of the monotonous repetition of what works.

To most parents, calming down their colicky baby can’t be seen as an objective because they can’t be as detached as an objective would command under different circumstances. Emotions are involved and this makes things a bit complicated. You may agree that psychological tiredness feels heavier than physical one.

Nobody can feel detached and distant to a baby’s desperate crying, especially a loving parent. As soon as the effort has started and a specific method is being applied, the parent feels frustrated and gives up just a tad bit before the effort gives fruit. In his/her frustration is unable to see that actually the method is working. The baby is also overwhelmed by the inconsistency that seems to result back to zero point leaving him/her as much helpless as before. This false cycle keeps repeating itself in a vain pattern. Don’t make this MISTAKE !

Persistence is all about believing in yourself. You will help your baby as soon as you feel confident and determined about your ability to control the situation. Haven’t you heard that night’s darkest hour is just before dawn? Persistence is rooted deep in our sense of self appreciation and self confidence. Going against what you see with your physical eyes towards reaching what your inner eyes have set as a goal means power of turning the odds to your favor….any odds ….under any circumstances throughout life.

So lets see how many reasons you have to reach your goal. You are a blessed parent of an amazing creature…an angel sent to you right from Heaven. You should be celebrating this fact alone for a couple of lives. So, go and try to whisper, sing, talk hush-hush, dance to your little Angel till you catch the rhythm of his/her precious core and help him/her fall asleep.

We people, are vibrational beings. It’s all about synchronizing your vibrational frequency with that of your baby’s. Are you sure you can’t persist enough and can’t be as monotonous as needed till your needle finds that frequency? Just DON’T GIVE UP. Keep trying. Keep insisting. Keep being confident and in control.

The first thing every Colicky Baby’s Parent will look for, right after the FIRST COLIC EPISODE breaks in, is a Remedy.
1. Medications (NONE proven safe and effective)
Simethicone (nonprescription Mylicon, non effective)
Lactase (non effective)
Sedatives (prescription), antihistamines, alcohol and motion-sickness medications, including dicyclomine (Bentyl) are outdated and potentially harmful colic remedies. These treatments have some potentially serious side effects, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Old-fashioned remedies such as giving the baby wine or other alcoholic beverages are dangerous and are now discouraged by most pediatricians.
Although anticholinergic drugs have been proven effective, they are not recommended by pediatricians because of their serious adverse effects.
2. Herbal Remedies For Colic (safe and effective)
Effective: combination of balm-mint, chamomile, fennel, licorice, vervain (Gripe Water, Baby’s Tum-Ease, Kindertee etc)
Other traditional remedies: mint family, anise, caraway, catnip, chamomile, cumin, dill, fennel, ginger etc
Home made Chamomile Tea is an excellent herbal remedy for colics.
3. Natural Rubber Pacifiers : I was literally saved by that kind of pacifier while trying to soothe my baby.

1. White Noise
2. Music has also proven useful in treating infant colic.
In one study, psychologists trained parents in classical conditioning. When the colicky baby was quiet, calm, and not crying, the parents played a recording of the baby’s favorite music (selected by the parents) and paid extra attention to the baby. When the infant started to cry, the parents turned off the tape and withdrew attention briefly. This procedure was followed throughout the day. Within days, crying and colic had significantly decreased. When the parents returned to their old way of dealing with crying, the crying again increased. Music therapy is definitely safe and worth trying, but it takes a fair amount of good observational skills and discipline for parents to carry it off.

Colics usually occur to some of the most brilliant and sensitive babies, just because of their temperament and their innate tendency to absorb a vast variety of environmental stimuli.

Where other babies just don’t respond, colicky baby will try to reflect back to the source of stimulus in an effort to adapt to the environment and reach a level of comfort.

So, imagine a storm of signals, visual, audio, smells, tastes, touches, coming towards his sensual receptors.

While most babies have developed an effective defense mechanism of shutting down the environmental storm of signals, colicky baby can’t shut this volume of input down and rest. This inability to achieve efficient self-soothing leads to crying, which is baby’s way to ask for help expressing his/her discomfort.

Caregiver’s role is to gradually teach the colicky baby how to effectively focus on relaxing patterns and get distracted from whatever caused excitement and tiredness. (stimuli overload)

Quite often parents of colicky babies feel guilty and responsible for their baby’s suffering. I know the feeling.
Colics have nothing to do with baby’s caregiver. They’re absolutely nobody’s fault. Watching your baby crying loudly usually during evening hours (6-9pm) right out of the blue, may bring tears to your eyes, and make your heart hurt, but please know that your baby is healthy and this condition occurs to 10-40% of newborns allover the world.

A colicky baby upsets family’s routine in a way that demands their focused attention to him/her. Maybe somehow colic is a nature’s mechanism to draw parents’ attention to a hypersensitive baby and help him/her reach an effective degree of self-soothing.

Remember that you are your baby’s point of reference and the center of his/her universe. You definitely must exude confidence and serenity which will reflect back to your baby. Letting yourself down with each colic’s onset is NOT an option that will help any of you.

To break the vicious cycle, you must break the pattern : baby cries – I get frustrated- baby gets more overwhelmed- I get hopeless- baby cries more – I want to die. Instead, try the following model: baby cries-I stay calm and sweet- baby keeps crying- I remain serene, loving and reassuring – baby slows down- I keep holding my baby close to my body rocking him/her, whispering lullabies or shushing in his/her ear using a pacifier or my finger- baby falls asleep in my arms. Show you’re in control, and baby will submit and learn to calm down.

Don’t be afraid of spoiling your baby. The more love you show, the better. Babies are made to be loved. Show your full attention and as much love and care as you can handle. You’ll be astonished by the results. My personal opinion is that colic is your baby’s way to ask for more emotional giving on your part. It’s so rewarding to respond to these signals.

<——- 3. Possible Causes

We may all avoid to openly give credit to any unorthodox
approach to a troubling situation such as a Colicky Baby, but I couldn’t write a
“360 degrees” report on Colicky Baby and leave this “superstition” out of it.

My grand-mothers had their own theories about “evil-eye” and so did some of my
elder clients in my Medical Store in Athens. As every mother with a Colicky Baby
would have done – not leaving stone unturned- I needed to put one more weapon in
my arsenal, especially since my baby had been with me in my Store every day
since we got the 20th day’s benediction, therefore he was constantly exposed to
many eyes. And since to me he was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen, it
was impossible not to attract the attention of a few “evil eyes”. So I had to
protect him from their malicious impact.

I learned the special prayer which had to be passed to me by a man on Good
Thursday. I don’t know if it was the Prayer that worked its miracle – it has
always helped me ever since regardless of the situation I was in- or my pressing
need to find the solution and my belief that this was the absolute way. Maybe it
was the calm and monotonous tone of my voice as I was whispering the Prayer’s
words to my Vasilis’s ear swinging him rhythmically in my arms and holding my
cheek next to his.

Sometimes, “placebo effect” is in full action as science would well describe it.
But isn’t this power of faith what all religions are based upon? Anyway…I could
have done more for the sake of seeing my Vasilis’s colics disappear.
