I am just looking for mums who have experienced or are experiencing the same situation as me. My little boy is now 10 1/2 weeks old and hasn’t been a great sleeper since birth. He cant seem to be able to settle himself, even with my help. I have tried rocking, patting, the pram, music, womb sounds, wrapping, baths and more and he still struggles. During the day he wont sleep unless I put him in the sling or go to bed with him. But even the (in bed) he only sleeps for 45 mins max. At night time I have tried loads of things, too. Pram, Hammock, co-sleeping… Everything seems to work for a while, now even the co-sleeping doesnt settle him anymore!! Not even holding him right next to me, or only if he is really tired or I have rocked him to sleep (which only works half of the time…)
I am really getting desperate and depressed as I cant seem to help him. I would do anything, but nothing seems to work. My baby is very alert and easily distracted and stimulated. He is growing and smiling, I am just exhausted from lack of sleep and physical demand.
I would just like to hear other mum’s experiences to feel that I am not alone! Most mum’s of fussy babies say they settle when they are held, but mine doesnt really, at least not always and not even through co-seeping. What else is there?? Please share your experiences with me! And sorry for the long post!

It’s significantly simpler to look after older infants and children than to care for a newborn baby. This is usually because they are awfully fragile and have wants that they cannot simply express – they manifest this need only by crying.

One of the probable factors that make a contribution to post-natal depression is the difficulty of green – or experienced – mums with newborn baby care. To minimize the impact of this condition, it is helpful to read books about caring for children. When you are informed about newborn baby care, chances are you will not be caught flat-footed when something unusual happens to your child.

What are the important things to know?

Old wives’ tales about newborn baby care abound. Sometimes listening to too many of these legends make mummies worry unnecessarily over their baby’s health. Old folks, for instance, continually point out that it is not a good idea to bring the newborn baby out of the house.

the truth is, almost all babies need morning sun to negate the initial stages of jaundice. Taking the baby outside even a mere few weeks after birth is completely acceptable, as long as the infant is wearing comfortable, cool clothes during summer and safely wrapped up in a warm blanket during the cooler months.

When the baby is several weeks old, you could notice some changes on his skin – that is, his skin may become flaky and could even’shed.’ it’s not important to apply lotions or oils, as this is standard for newborns. In newborn baby care, the employment of chemicals is usually avoided even as these are thought to be safe for adults.

Even the baby’s scalp will shed its top layer a few weeks after birth. In some cases, a little help is needed in removing this layer of dead cells. You can carefully rub it away with a sponge while bathing the baby, but there’s really no need to apply oils or lotions on his calp.

Many children will also develop mild rashes. These are standard and newborn baby care dictates that they must not be treated with creams and ointments that may be too tough for the baby’s skin. These rashes might be due to different factors. When the rashes get worse or seem too out of the standard, it’s best to consult the pediatrician about it.

Another common issue in newly born baby care is whether to carry the infant or not when it is crying. Fogeys often agree on not giving in to a kid’s crying because this might wreck the kid. However, at that age, it is almost impossible to spoil a newly born.

Common newly born baby care sense will tell you that when a newborn baby cries, it’s because it wishes something – that something could be anything from milk or a diaper change. Being comforted is also a basic need of newborns, so denying them this in their first few weeks of life may lead to an extreme psychological impact on the kid.

What do I do with the stump?

Many new mothers who are not too well-vesred in newborn baby care frequently feel ill about having to handle the umbilical cord. Remember that the stump is nothing else but dead protein so accidentally touching it won’t cause any harm to the infant.

the most important thing to know in newborn baby care, as regards the umbilical cord, is to keep it dry at any time. If it unavoidably gets wet during bathing, take a cotton ball doused with alcohol and clean the rope with it.

By the end of the second week, the stump will have fallen off. After this happens, refrain from showering the infant more often than every 2 or 3 days, to allow it to completely heal.

Colic – Cure For Colic

Colic is a very frustrating thing for a baby to have. Colic is common in most new born babies. Alot of you new mums and dads out there i am sure are dealing with colic in your baby right this very minute. Mayne you are desperate for ways to ease and cure colic for good.

First off all you need to understand that colic is not life threatening or danger for your baby in any way. Colic may occur in your baby during the first few months of life and it is a very normal event for a majority of babies. So do not overly worry!

Is There A Cure For Colic?

Looking for a cure for colic can be time consuming and annoying as there can be so much information out there. However you will find that some of these tips and recommendations for cures actually will prove to be effective! Although there are so many cures and recommendations out there for you to follow. If you choose the one that have been proven to be effective and ones that you are comfortable with, you will evetually ease or even cure your babies colic for good.

Some recommedaton and tips include:

1- Not over feed your baby. Your baby will let you know when they have had enough bottle.

2- Switching to a soya based formula has been medically proven to reduce colic in babies or maybe just try and switch your formula to a different brand.

3- Winding your baby regularly throughout feeding will also help in preventing the build-up of gas that is thought to cause colic. Lightly tap or rub your baby’s back. But be sure not to tap or rub too hard or too soft.

4- When feeding your baby their bottle be sure that the teeth of the bottle is always full with the formula and that you never allow your baby to suck in any air, as this will result in your baby having more wind which in turn will worsen colic.

5- If you are breast feeding try and watch your diet and avoid foods such as spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine and so on as they are known to irritate colic!

6- Comforting your baby and rocking them gently may help to calm them down when colic is affecting them.

Breastfeeding Advice

When considering or practicing breastfeeding, we are faced with many opinions (often conflicting) as to the ‘proper’ way to breastfeed your baby.

This can be very confusing for new mums and mums-to-be. There are many reasons for this. Some breastfeeding practices are drawn from cultures that don’t mirror the reality of living in a modern world. Baby’s expected weight gain may be based on norms gathered from formula fed babies or unrepresentative samples. And professionals working in the area of infant development often have little or no training around breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding- New Multi Media Book

So Maire Clements’ new book ‘The New Motherly Art of Conscious Breastfeeding’ is a breath of fresh air in the field. Maire has been working with mothers and babies for three decades. As a nurse working with premature babies, an educator and consultant with her own practice she has developed a unique insight into how breastfeeding develops, baby’s skills in relation to breastfeeding (whether full-term of premature) and how to optimise the breastfeeding experience for mom and baby.

Breastfeeding Truths

Maire also recognises something that is often overlooked in the areas of breastfeeding and lactation… Even though breastfeeding is natural, it is still a skill that is learned by a mother and taught to her baby.

Maire has distilled her vast knowledge and experience into the Conscious Breastfeeding system designed especially for modern mums. This book will become essential reading for all professionals in the area of lactation and infant development and parents who know that breastfeeding or nursing is meant to be a joyful, fulfilling experience for all.

Pain Free Breastfeeding

Maire starts from the premise and knowing that breastfeeding should be pain-free and teaches us how to make that a reality. She recognises the important role of the partner in breastfeeding success and so the Conscious Breastfeeding System supports the whole family to thrive in breastfeeding.

Maire is a wonderful example of what we can bring forth into the world when we follow our passion and deep knowing of how life can be. This book has already been a great resource for me as I prepare for my twins.

‘The New Motherly Art of Conscious Breastfeeding’ will serve to empower so many mums and dads….creating a beautiful foundation for your baby and you to connect deeply in a way that supports the whole family.

Queen Bee posted:

Establishing breastfeeding is one of the many challenges you’ll face as a new mum, and it’s just that little bit easier if you have the right clothes to enable you to meet baby’s needs without showing any more skin than you want to.

Versatility is what Queen Bee does best – keep in mind that many of our pieces are made from fabrics with some stretch, and are specially styled to take you right through from pregnancy to post-partum breastfeeding.

If you plan on breastfeeding your baby, you’re in very good company. We all probably remember how the late Princess Diana insisted on breastfeeding her baby sons, and plenty of big name celebrities have done the same. Famous Aussie actress mums like Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts have talked openly about breastfeeding, and actress Isla Fisher made sure all her outfits for Confessions of a Shopaholic were breastfeeding friendly. She said “They were all breastfeeding proof – they could be whipped off in a minute and then put back on.”

Last year you may have seen the beautiful, naturally lit photos of Angelina Jolie breastfeeding one of her twins, taken by Brad Pitt, which not surprisingly made it onto a magazine cover, and a couple of years earlier, a photo of her and Brad with baby Shiloh clearly showed her nursing bra straps. If it’s good enough for Brangelina…

We’ve all probably heard plenty about how important breastfeeding is. The World Health Organisation tells us that “Breast milk is the ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants” and that “Infants should be exclusively breastfed – i.e. receive only breast milk – for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health.” But it’s also widely acknowledged (or should be) that like any new skill, it can take time and effort to establish breastfeeding successfully, and the more help you have, the better.

Remember, help is out there! Even after you leave hospital, organizations like the ABA in Australia, or La Leche League International in many other parts of the world, are available to provide help and ongoing advice on any area of breastfeeding you may be having trouble with. In many cases these organizations are staffed by volunteers who have breastfed themselves and have experience with the very issues you may be facing.

While much is made of how difficult it can be to establish breastfeeding, that’s certainly not the case for everyone, and once you and baby have things worked out, it’s very easy to continue with – especially with the right clothes! Gossip Girl actress Kelly Rutherford plans to try feeding her two year old son until he weans naturally after seeing how well it worked for her doula. Certainly, the closeness and emotional bonding breastfeeding facilitates can take many new mothers by surprise. Alias actress Jennifer Garner has talked of how emotional she has found the breastfeeding relationship to be, with daughter Violet.

So with the right advice, you may end up breastfeeding for longer than you expect. That means investing in some specialised breastfeeding clothes makes sense. Tops designed for breastfeeding often utilise an upper layer which can be lifted away to reveal openings for feeding, like this one by Milky Way, or a layer which can be pulled aside in a cross-over top, like this beautiful Cross-over hoodie. In some cases, breastfeeding tops may have their own built in bra, like this Henley by 1 in the Oven. Remember you also have the option of layering; with a breastfeeding cami or singlet as your base layer, you can wear another shirt over the top and simply lift it up to feed, while keeping your tummy safely covered.

Queen Bee’s floral nursing cami is a great wardrobe basic, (in fact, why not get two?). Our popular Peekaboo range also offers lots of inspiration, with your choice of ¾ length sleeves, tank, short sleeved top and short sleeved tunic in a variety of colours. Each top in this range has their cute signature duck printed on the inside of the fold up layer, to give the baby something to look at while feeding.

Browse our breastfeeding range to see all the other great tops on offer, and remember, we have a wonderful range of breastfeeding dresses too, not to mention nursing bras…
